         On 24.6.2006 Hon’ble Chief Minister announced that the educational fees and special fees of the tsunami affected students will be borne by the government for one more year. Based on this announcement, the scheme was extended for the year 2006-07 and Rs.30.09 crore was sanctioned benefiting 58,790 students.


The children who lost one of the parents in the tsunami numbered 1,713. A Fixed Deposit for Rs.51,000 has been made for each child and totally Rs.8.74 crore has been deposited. The monthly interest accruing out of the deposit is used for the educational expenses of the child


The children who study in Class-I to X whose families were affected by tsunami are assisted with a sum of Rs.300/- per month to defray their school going expenses. 81,264 children have benefited in the Academic Year 2005-06 at a cost of Rs.14.63 crore and 1,29,975 children were benefited in the Academic Year 2006-07, at a cost of Rs.41.18 crore. For the academic year 2007-08, Rs.45.76 crore has been released for the benefit of 1,27,125 children. For the year of 2008-09, Rs.33.27 crore has been released for the benefit of 1,23,697 Children, for the first two quarters.
