Maritime Transport is indeed the largest and most efficient means of transport on the global scale. India is ranked as 6^th manpower supplier in the International Maritime Community. The Government of Tamil Nadu established Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy in the year of 1998 with the sole purpose of improving the quality of Maritime Training so as to offer better opportunity to the aspiring youngmen in the maritime field.

In order to ensure quality education, the Government of Tamil Nadu constituted the Governing Council comprising of senior officials of Central/State Government to oversee the functioning of the Academy. At present the Principal Secretary/Chairman, Tamil Nadu Maritime Board, Chennai is the Chairman of Governing Council and managing the affairs of the Academy.

Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy is located in the Pearl City Thoothukudi, which is one of the major ports in India and Headquarters of Thoothukudi District.  It is well connected to the other parts of the country by Air, Road and Railways.  The Vakaikulam airport is situated 12 Kms away from Thoothukudi.

The Academy is ideally located adjoining sea in a sprawling campus.  The Academy has well furnished classrooms with hostel specially designed for simulating ship living conditions of two-tier berths.  Laminated displays of different types of ships, machineries and nautical equipments including ships models are exhibited in the classrooms. A spacious dining hall with pantry and kitchen takes care of the catering requirements of all the trainees. Indoor and Outdoor recreation facilities are available inside the campus

Poompuhar Shipping Corporation Ltd. has its own and chartered vessels which are continuously transporting coal to Thoothukudi Thermal Power Station and has also got well equipped marine workshop with all modern amenities in Thoothukudi. This facilitates, importing of practical training on board the ships as well as comprehensive training ashore in the marine workshop. Thus, TNMA can boast of having best of training facilities comparable with reputed marine academies.
