ACTIVITIES OF MAIN BIO-CONTROL RESEARCH LABORATORY
(Unit of Tamilnadu Cooperative Sugar Federation Ltd.)I
OBJECTIVES OF MAIN BIO-CONTROL RESEARCH LABORATORY
- To undertake mass production and distribution of bio-inputs through our member sugar mills to sugarcane growers of
Tamilnadu.
-
To minimize the utilization of chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides in sugarcane cultivation.
- To enhance the soil fertility by application of bio-inputs.
- To impact the technology on vermicompost production by utilizing the indigenous earthworm to member sugar mills.
- To increase the awareness organic farming.
- To popularize the production technology of bio-control agents for the control of sugarcane pests in sugarcane ecosystem and to reduce the environmental pollution hazards.
II COMMERCIAL BENEFITS TO SUGARCANE GROWERS
- Reducing the cost of sugarcane cultivation by advocating the use of bio-fertilisers and bio-pesticides
- Increasing the sugarcane yield to fetch more net income to the farmers.
- Improving the soil health.
III RESEARCH WORKS UNDERTAKEN:
This Lab is recognized by the Department of Scientific and
Industrial Research, Government of India, New Delhi.
- Research on nitrogen – fixing Glucon acetobacter diazotrophicus, Herbaspirillum spp., Burkholderia spp. etc phosphate solubilizing and agricultural waste degrading / decomposing microorganisms.
- Undertaking research activities pertaining to biocontrol agents like Trichogramma parasitoids, Bacillus thurinigiensis, Pseudomonas fluorescens Trichoderma viride and Metarrhizium anisoplise.
We are getting financial assistant from different funding agencies like Tamil Nadu Coop. Union, Department of Biotechnology, Sugarcane Development Fund and from our member sugar mills. Further Collaborative Research Schemes are also prepared with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Murugappa Chettiyar Research Centre, Chennal and Sun Agro Services, Chennai.
IV LAB TO LAND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
Institute is headed by the qualified most experienced person from Sugar Industry who is having Doctorate degree in Agriculture. All the R & D projects are undertaken by the research Officers of this institute and are guided and supervised by the Head of this Institute.
Technological ideas are imparted to the farmers through field trials, organizing grower’s meetings, village meetings frequently. We are conducting seminars for updating the technologies on bio-inputs. We distribute leaflets on the utility and application methods of bio-inputs. We also publish 3000 nos. of Bimonthly home journal KARUMBU KARANGAL in Tamil. Farmers consult and visit the laboratory if there is any serious outbreak of disease or pest and get technical opinions on various aspects like use of bio-inputs, soil reclamation, pest and disease management, cane varieties and other cultural practices to get maximum cane yield.
V OUTCOME OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
- Mass multiplication of Trichogramma Parasitoid for the control of internode borer in sugarcane.
- Mass multiplication of the new bio fertilisr Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus for sugarcane.
- Mass multiplication of Granulosis virus/Bacillus thuringiensis for the control of Early shoot borer in sugarcane.
- Application of bioinoculum for hastening the decomposition of sugarcane trash and other agricultural wastes in to an organic manure.
- Introduction of recycling technology in sugar mills through earthwors and bio inoculum for production of Vermicompost utilizing sugar industry bye-products like Bagasse, Pressmud and ETP water.
- Mass multiplication of new biopesticide Metarrhizium anisopliae for the control of White grub, in sugar cane.
- Mass multiplication new biofertilisr Arbuscular Mycorrhiza for sugarcane.
