   Wood Carvings

Wood craft is exquisitely crafted in variety of exotic ways covering a wide range of items in Tamilnadu since time immemorial.  From huge wooden temple cars (upto eight meters in size) to intricately carved multiple set-in panels with motifs involving deities, mythical animals like yaalis, real animals, erotic figures and decorative floral motifs.  Various varieties of common wood and teak wood are used for the purpose.

The finest wood carving in Tamilnadu is associated with its temples.  It is at its best in processional vehicles including chariots for the deities.  Beautiful woodcraft is also found in the elaborately carved wooden arches, doorways and panels at the entrance of the temples.
