Sericulture industry has the potential of providing employment and income generation to the farmers in Tamilnadu. Mostly women are involved in garden maintenance, silkworm rearing, cocoon harvesting, silk reeling, etc. and roughly 60 % of works are carried out by rural women.
A review of various developmental schemes in the State like Part-II schemes, Hill Area Development Programme, Western Ghat Development Programme, SERI-2000 and Central Silk Board aided Catalytic Development Programme indicates that Sericulture activities in the State have been recording an increasing trend during the current year, even though there have been fluctuations in the past due to various factors.
