Mamallapuram Town Panchayat (Kancheepuram District)
Highlighted by the
rising Sun, this Pallava Temple stand as a reminder of a bygone age. Built in
the 7th century, this ancient pallava port is today in the side of
several antique sculptural marvels. The only remaining shore temple is a
spectacular two spired shrine which is unique in that it houses shrines for both
Vishnu and Shiva. Mounted on a dashing lion, a maidenly amazon with slender
grace, Goddess Durga, Attacks the powerful kingly Asura. The Pallavas has
perfected the art of sculpting rocks of built temples without using brick,
mortar, or timber and the five monolithic rathas. Five rock temples which have
been carved in the form of processional temple chariots have been named after
Pandava brothers, the heroes of the epic Mahabaratha. Arjuna's penance' is the
world's largest bas relief, measuring 27m by 9m. This sculptural panel shows
animals, Gods, and angels contemplating the descent of the Ganges from it's
source in the Himalayas and also depicts popular fables from the Panchatantra.
It is popularly believed that this is the only temple in a series which is
survived by Sea erosion. Majestic and lordly this gigantic elephant carved from
a single boulder represents one of the finest specimens of animal carvings in
India in early VII century. Robust earthly beauty and richness of animal life
force and vitality are reflected in this pallava style of cave architecture.
