History And Geography
Granary of Tamil Nadu, River Cauvery is the main source for cultivation in this district, which is known for its heritage in water management. The composite Thanjavur district, with its fertile soil, is one of the largest paddy cultivation areas not only in Tamil Nadu but also in South India.
Thanjavur District is located on the east coast of Tamil Nadu. The district lies between 78° 43’ and 79° 23’ of the Eastern longitudes and 9° 50′ and 11° 25′ of the Northern latitudes.
Since composite Thanjavur is large in extent, for administrative convenience, several districts were carved out of Thanjavur district. On 19.01.1991, Nagapattinam district was formed by bifurcating Thanjavur district. At that time, Nagapattinam district included Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Mannargudi, Nagapattinam divisions, and Valangaiman taluk from the Kumbakonam division.
In 1997, Nagapattinam district was bifurcated into Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur for administrative convenience.
The district is bound by the Coloroon river on the North, which separates it from Ariyalur and Tiruchirapalli districts. To the East, it is bounded by Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, to the South by the Palk Strait and Pudukottai, and to the West by Pudukottai and Tiruchirapalli districts.
