GOLDEN ROCK,PONMALAI

If the historic town of Tiruchi is identified with the Rock Fort, the temple town ofSrirangam is identified with Renganathar temple. Similarly, the industrial township of Goldenrock or Ponmalai is identified with the rock, Ponmalai or Goldenrock.
Poneswari Amman temple is located on this rock it has been named Ponmalai. Anotherversions says centuries ago, when this rock was observed from a long distance during sunset, it used to glow or glitter like gold.

 

 

 

Mohammed Ali took refuge at the Rock Fort in Tiruchi. The British sent an army headed by Robert Clive, Caption Cope of the British army camped in and around the vantage points of Tiruchi. Ponmalai was one of the vantage ponts.On the eastern side of Ponmalaiis the railway workshop, whose Armoury Gate had stored ammunition during the Second World War.On the western side of this rock is yet another fortress, the Central Jailof Tiruchi, where many noted freedom fightes were jailed.On the southern side of this rock is the international airport at Chempet. The rock is about 140 ft. high and around its middle portion is situated a Murugan temple. There are about 75 rock-cutsteps to reach the temple. Adjacent to this temple is the dargah, Zindha Sha Madarsha.Apart from this there are five mammoth water tanks built on the hill itself by Britishers during 1927, when they were at the held more affairs at this worship. The capacity of each tank is 30 lakh litrers. These five tanks can store nearly oneand a half crores of liters of water at a time.This water brought from the Cauverybasin at Sarkarpalayam, supplies the needs of the railway colonies of Tiruchi Kajamalai, Ponmalai, Tiruchi Junction and the Ponmalai workshop.


BUDDISM IN Tiruchy REGION


Achrya budha duttha mahathera born in Chola country also lived in Vurakaburam (Woraiyur) around 5 AD . He has written Madurathaivilasini and abithavatharam in relation to his living in Tiruchirappalli and his works speaks volume in a prise of chola country ,Boothamangalam,poompukar etc . Six feet stone statue his found in Mangalam village in the Aravan temple 15 kms north east of Musiri and !5 kms south west of Thuraiyur.


The bottom portion of the peedam of the statue has 3 lions.The statue is in padmasana diyana posture. The face and the broad shoulder ,long arms and the palm are resting on each other.It is the best example of workmanshipThe statue is having Usnisa flame.

A 51" high Buddha statue is found at Vellanur 25 kms near Lalgudi .Usnisa and the breast band are found in the statue as in other buddha statues of the chola country. Prabha at the back side of the face is in a differnent shape .This statue is in padmasana diyana posture with the elongated ears.A very old viswanather temple of chola style is also existing here.
