KALAI KAVERI, TIRUCHY'S TEMPLE OF ART
In Tamil Nadu, where the art of Bharatham was born, dance and music
are deep rooted in the minds of the people. The river Cauvery, in particular,
carries the honour of having raised a number of musicians, including
the Musical Trinity, in places along her banks. And one can witness
the Divine Dance of Lord Nataraja in Chaidambaram.
Early in the twentieth century, training of children in fine arts was
confined to certain families only. But gradually the trend changed.
More and more families started evincing interest in imparting training
to their daughters in dance and music resulting in a resurgence.
In Tiruchy City and adjoining areas the credit for creating an art-consciousness
among the public goes to the Diocese of Tiruchi. What started off as
a Communication Media Centre gave birth to the institution, the Kalai
Kaveri, in 1977 under the inspiring tutelage of Fr. S.M. George. As
years rolled by the institution's name and fame spread.
The new building of the college which was inaugurated in December 2002
as part of its Silver Jubilee Celebrations is an architectural beauty.
From top to bottom the building reflects a style of architecture associated
with temples and emanates an air of divine purity.
A crowning achievement was the establishment of the Kalai Kaveri College
of Fine Arts in 1996 with affiliation to the Bharathidasan University.
The college offers full time courses for Bachelor's and Master's Degree
in Bharatha Natyam and Classical Music, both vocal and instrumental.
Part time courses are also available. There is unity in diversity with
students drawn from various parts and belonging to different faiths
undergoing training. WEB SITE : www.kalaikavirifinearts.com
