TSUNAMI DISASTER – RESCUE, RELIEF AND REHABILITATION ACTIVITIES IN TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT
On hearing the news of the havoc created by the Tsunami (Killer Tidal Waves) on 26.12.2004, the management of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations operating buses along the coastal areas flung into action and started operating buses from 8.30 am onwards for evacuating the public, affected by natural calamity from the affected areas to safer places on 26.12.2004 and continued on 27.12.2004, as identified and directed by the District Collectors and Superintendents of Police.
Besides evacuation of Tsunami victims to safer places, State Express Transport Corporation has transported 607 passengers who arrived from Andaman, to their native places free of cost, for the period from 29.12.2004 to 9.1.05. Special operation of buses was also carried out by State Express Transport Corporation and 1065 passengers evacuated and transported from Nagapatinam, Tiruvarur, Velankanni to their destinations. Further, State Express Transport Corporation, on 31.12.04 had taken a team of 18 persons to Nagapatinam for medical Relief work free of cost.
MTC, Chennai has operated 12 buses on 27.12.04 to transport the affected persons to the safe places.
TNSTC, Villupuram has operated 172 buses on 26.12.04 and 275 buses on 27.12.04 to transport the affected persons to the safe places.
TNSTC, Coimbatore has operated 6 buses from 28.12.2004 to 7.1.2005 to transport the volunteers and Army men for attending to the rescue, relief and rehabilitation activities in respect ot Tsunami disaster.
TNSTC, Madurai had made elaborate arrangements from 26.12.2004 to 31.12.04 in providing timely bus services to transport the people affected by Tsunami, from the coastal belt places like Ovari, Kooduthulai, Periathalai, Perumanal, Idinthakarai, Thoomaiyarpuram, Kottapuli. On getting information from the District Collector, buses were released then and there to facilitate transporting the affected people to safe places.
TNSTC, Madurai (Nagercoil Region) has transported 10,000 affected persons on 26.12.04 to 27.12.04 to the safe places. Transport facilities had also been made to transport the affected persons to the Hospitals and Rehabilitation centres. Totally nearly 10 lakhs people have traveled in the Corporation buses on the above dates free of cost.
Officers of the above Corporation visited the camps and arranged 275 buses according to the requirement, such as transporting people to and from the hospitals, transportation of people from the camp to the coastal villages, carrying of relief items free of cost besides permitting the affected to travel free of cost in the local buses.
TNSTC, Kumbakonam has operated 241 buses on 26.12.04 and 27.12.04 and transported 1,87,826 passengers to the safe places from 26.12.2004 to 31.12.2004.
