Cholan Roadways Corporation commenced its operations in Thanjavur and Tiruchirapalli Districts on the 1st of March 1972 on Government’s transferring buses taken over from Sri Ramavilas service (64 vehicles) Raman & Raman Limited (180 vehicles) and Sathi Vilas, Porayar (50 vehicles) under the Tamilnadu Fleet Operators Stage Carriages (Acquisition) Act 1971.  Its headquarters is Kumbakonam. Its fleet strength as on 31st January 1985 was 884.  In view of its huge size, it was bifurcated and, after bifurcation, Cholan Roadways Corporation Limited is having Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur Districts as its operational area.  Cholan Roadways Corporation Limited was renamed as Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Kumbakonam (Division-I) Ltd, Kumbakonam on 01.07.97 and its fleet strength as on 31.03.2003 was 925. During the year 2002-2003, 64 buses have been purchased for replacement.
