PRASANNA VENKATASALAPATHI
TEMPLE, THURAIYUR
Arulmigu Prasanna Venkatachalapathi temple lies at the top of
Perumalmalai that lies 960 feet above ground level in pachaimalai
hills, 3 km from Thuraiyur in Tiruchirappalli district. This temple
is said to be constructed by the grand son of Karikal Chozhan.
The kings are later named as Karuppannar and Veeraswamy and are
worshipped in the temple .Musical pillars are seen here. The stone
sculptures of ten avathars of Lord Vishnu are here. The Goddess
here is named as Alamelumangai Thayar..All the Saturdays of Tamil
month of 'puratasi' (September-October ) are celebrated in a grand
manner, during which time more number of pilgrims are visiting
this temple .Hundreds of devotees are taking part in the Girivalam
procession around the Perumalmalai hillock on all full-moon days.

| KORANGANATHA TEMPLE- SRINIVASANALLUR
Koranganatha temple situated on the banks of the
river Cauvery at Srinivasanallur about 50 kms from Tiruchy on the
Tiruchy - Salem highway, has some of the finest early Chola stone
sculptures and with good architecture .This heritage temple, declared
as a monument by ASI , is not a living temple.

GUNASEELAM
Arulmigu Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal Temple lies
16 Kms from Tiruchirappalli at Gunaseelam, on the northern banks
of the river Cauvery During the Uchi kala pooja ( 11:30 am to 12:30
hrs ) and Artha Jama Pooja ( 08: 30 PM ) the holy water is sprinkled
on the devotee which is said to be expiating all kinds of evil effects
and mind diseases. During the whole Dhanu month( Dec - Jan ) Koodaravalli
and Vaikunda Ekatasi festivals take place. Apart from that Purattasi
saturdays , float festival and Brahmotsavam are also important festivals
here . Annual festival is celebrated during the month of September-October
with the famous car festival. |

NEELLIVANESWARAR TEMPLE THIRUPAINGILI
Arulmigu Viswanathar temple , otherwise called
Neelivaneswarar temple lies 20 kms north - west of Tiruchirappalli
. The Sorudaieeswarar shrine associated with the divine poet Appar
, Athikara Vallavar ( Somaskander ) who gave rebirth to Yama ( god
of death ) cave shrine , the Siva rock hewn shrine is said to be
done by Mahendravarma Pallava , otherwise called Gunabaran ,during
640 AD .
Plantain tree is workshipd here and poojas are performed to the
tree .which has been decorated and worshipped . Both men and women,
including Christians and even Muslims perform poojas to the plantain
tree especially on the Sundays and Fridays. All the articles needed
for the special poojas are also available in the temple campus itself,
he added. The temple has preserved hundreds of invitations received
from those whose marriages have been solemnized after they performed
the poojas.
There is no Navagraha shrine separately as the steps leading to
the main shrine is said to be Navagrahas. In front of statue of
the Nandhi, the Navagrahas are prayed by lighting the stone cavern
hole lamps made on the floor. The name of the goddess is Vishalakshi/
Neelnedunkanni amman.
There are many stone inscriptions in this temple. Rajendra chola
- I Rajathi Rajan-I and Chola kings donated for regular daily poojas
and maintenance of the temple. Chinnandavar & Periyandavar,
rural guardian deities are also located in the temple premises.
Karthigai festival is a noted festival here. This temple is also
called ' south kailash'. The statue of Suthamahamunivar lies in
the outer precincts of the temple. The shrine of lord vishnu named
Senthamaraikannan lies inside the temple.
There is also a good fresh water spring 2 kms north of the temple
on the way to Arulmigu Pundarikatsha Perumal temple, Thiruvellarai
2 kms from the spring . |

| MARAGATHALESWARASWAMI TEMPLE
THIRUENGOIMALAI
Thiruengoimalai Arulmigu Maragathaleswara swami
Temple lies 40 kms from Tiruchirappalli and 5 kms from Musiri, Taluk
headquarters in Tiruchirappalli District. Thiruengoimalai lies between
Musiri and Thottiam. The hillock is otherwise called Maragathamalai
/ Thenkailayam / Sivasakthimalai / Malaikovil / Erattaimalai. Name
of the Goddess is Maragathambigai / Maragathavalli. God is also
named as Maragathasalanathar/ Malaikozhundar / Achutheeswarar /
Birameswarar / Indreekarar / Threethar.
The river Cauvery passes nearby the hillock. The river 'Surpanathi'
passes adjoining the hillock. The river is otherwise called Kondayurumarai
or Kondamarai. The name is said to be a corruption of Thiru-i-ongaimalai
('the' holy high bees 'mountains')and to have been so called because
the sage Agastya , finding the gates of the Siva temple closed one
evening, turned himself into a bee and so obtained entrance to perform
his worship. The lingam of the temple is said to be transparent
and also to throw a green shadow when camphor is burned. It is therefore
called the ('Emerald') Maragathalingam.The god is connected with
the deities of kadambarkovil and Ratnagiri. At all these three temples
Mondays in Karthigai and the Taipoosam day are special holy days.
The temple is sung in Devaram also. At the base of the temple lies
Bogar Sidha temple. 500 vertical steps lead to the temple at the

MATRARI
VARATHAR TEMPLE THIRUVASI
Tiruvasi (the corruption of its ancient name of Tiruppachil Asramam)
is on the northern bank of river Kollidam (Coleroon). There lies
Matrarivaradar and Balambigai temple 12 kms from Tiruchy on the
road to Musiri and Salem. On the northern bank of Kollidam and on
the south side of the main road, there is an ancient early Chola
temple of the period of Aditya I called that of Tiruk-Kadambatturai
Udaiya Mahadevar (now named Matsyapurisvarar temple) at Tudaiyar. |

AMALEESVARAR TEMPLE- GOPURAPATTI
This is a small village west of Tiruvasi (alias Tirupachil Asramam).
There is an early Chola temple in ruins here, but scientifically
renovated and restored to its barest original form. Lord of the
temple is called Thiru Amaleesvaram Udaiya Mahadevar in the inscriptions.
Other temples in the Agri., field are also worth visiting.

Nityasundareswaraswami ( Thirunedungalanathaswami ) temple is at
a village 5 kms north of Thiruverumbur via Thuvakudi .This temple
of great antiquity, is included in the Kshertavenba of the Tamil
saint, the Ayyadigal kadavarkon, who should be ascribed to the days
before Appar and Sambandar. Varahi here is worshipped specially
even by devotees of Coimbatore region with specific vows. |

Parasuramesvarar temple is near Lalgudi and is reached by turning
left at the 15th kms from Tiruchy on the Tiruchy-Ariyalur road.From
the main road, the village is 2 kms. And the main temple is dedicated
to Samavedeeswarar and the amman is Loganayaki. The temple is a
very old one dating back to the days of Rajaraja . |

LALGUDI
Thiruthavathuri, now called lalgudi, is situated
on the banks of river Coleroon,(known also as north Cauvery,) about
20 kms from Tiruchy. The temple here has won a unique place among
the temples of Tamilnadu, in that it was here that the seven rishes,atri,
brihu, pulsithar, vasistar, gauthamar, aangeerasar and marichi,
prayed the presiding deity, Saptharisheeswarar, to ward off the
bad period they were passing through.The temple areas and mandapams
were extended by the Parantaka kings. |

the deities here.The temple has huge walls and lies on the banks
of Cauvery in green setting.

NANDHIKESWARAR SIVA TEMPLE THURIYUR
Arulmigu Maha Sambathgowri Amman - Nandhikeswarar Siva temple lies
in the heart of the Thuraiyur town, 48 kms from Tiruchirappalli.
The Lord is sung by Appar, Arunagirinathar and other Saivite saints.
This temple is added with shrines during 8th - 14th centuries.It
is said that Iyyanar, Pidari, Nagakanni, Indran, Thirumal, Venuvanamunivar,
Parasaran have prayed the Lord Siva here. The temple tank is called
'Nandhi Theertham. It is told that the Sundra Chozhan, named the
Linga here as 'Nandhikeswarar. There are many life size exquisitely
carved stone sculptures in the temple. There is a Nagakanni Amman
statue enshired in this temple .During all fridays, during Raghukalam
(10.30 am to 12.00 Noon ) Special poojas are conducted for this
Goddess, to expiate the sin of Raghu- Kethu, delay in marriages
etc. There is a beautiful centre Mandapam (Maiya Mandapam) in a
dilapidated condition in the big irrigation tank nearby the temple.
Sri Vedantha Mahadesigar temple also lies here. During all festive
days of Lord Siva, more number of devotees are visiting the Nandhikeswara
temple. |

The presiding deity here is in the sitting posture with Shri Azhahiya
Manavala Perumal standing behind . .This is the second of the 108
famous shrines of vishnu blessed with Mangalasasanam by Nammalvar.
The temple is in existence even before 7 th century. The inner wall
of the shrine of Nammalvar has brilliant wall paintings over 200
years old repainted 60 years back ,depicting the Matsa and Narashimha
avatars , Acharyas, Alwars, Vaishnavite mythology ,the law of justice
and dharma as enunciated by Ambarisha etc . |

a separate shrine close to the sanctum sanctorum in the Nandrudayan

TEMPLE-THIRUVERUMBUR
This temple is located 15 kms east of Tiruchirappalli on the way
to Thanjavur. In a 60 ft hillock lies the Erumbeeswarar Narun kuzhal
nayagi temple build by early chola rulers. This temple is sung by
the poet Appar. This temple is a protected monument under the control
of the A.S.I. The sculptures and a dilapidated madapam and the fine
garden maintained by BHEL is worth visiting. The temple tank and
the temple car are of interest to the visitor. |

| SUNDARESWARER TEMPLE -NANGAVARAM
Nangavaram is 18 kms north west of Tiruchy .It
has an ancient Sundareswarar temple and a Pidari temple. It is said
that the daughter of a Chola king of Uraiyur was born with the face
of a jackal and by her devotion to the lord of this place, she came
to have the normal human features. Hence this place is called Mangai-varam
( or) Nangai-varam, whose correct form is Nangavaram. The village
is called Arinjigai Sathur vedhimangalam. A stone panel with 24
Jain Theerthangaras is worth visiting here. |

Kailasmudaiyar temple. It dates back to the 11th century (1065 A.D)
and is a treasure house of historic information. |

VINNAGARAM TEMPLE- KOTTAMANGALAM
Sri Rajakesari Vinnagara Emperuman Temple Kottamangalam is about
a kilometer and a half west of Kattur, which is 3 kms from Lalgudi
in the Tiruchy district. In this village, there is a ruined Siva
temple called that of Brahmesvara Udaiya Nayanar. Ayyanar temple,
a Pidari temple and a ruined Vishnu temple are also here. |

TEMPLE - PERUNGUDI
On the northern wall of the central shrine of Agasteeswarar Temple
, there is an inscription of Parakesarivarman.(Adithya II). It records
a gift of land for a lamp to the temple by the wife of Sembiyan
Uratturnattukkon alias Mayilan Tindan of Pudukkudi.The Agasteeswarar
temple is a monument of the days of Sundara Chola and Aditya. |

| MASILAMANEESWARAR TEMPLE-
UTATUR (URATUR)
Uttattur, whose ancient name was Urrattur is about
3.2 kms south-east of Padalur, which is 34 kms from Tiruchy on the
Tiruchy - Chennai trunk road. It has an early Chola temple, constructed
by Rajaraja Chola. The Gopuram and a few Mandapams have been constructed
by Nayaks. The presiding deity is Suttha Rathneswarar with the consort
Akhilandeswari. This temple near Nandiar is associated with the
seven sacred rivers of India. Once the Siva here adjudged Ganges
as the supreme among them and so ordered his vahana nandhi to face
her side than his, the scene can be seen now. The Brahma Theertham
well lies in between the main deity and nandhi devar, which is very
sacred. The wooden temple car has exquisite sculptures.
Gothanda Ramar ancient temple, Muruga temple in the nearby Hillock,
and Chelliamman temple are worth visiting here.

KAILASANATHAR & BRAHMA PUREESWARAR
TEMPLES- THIRUPATTUR
The Kailasanathar temple constructed by the Pallavas is on the
lines of the Kailasanathar temple, Kancheepuram. The big stone
bull and the sudai made sculptures here are worth visiting.Here
are shrines for twelve Lingas of Saivism. One shrine is dedicated
to Mandooganathar with the Linga having a hole in memory of the
frog that has worshipped him. The Kailasanathar temple is a monument
to be preserved for its heritage value.
The Brahama Sambath Gowrisamede Brammapureeswarar shrine is adjoining
the Pallava temple in the same complex. There is a separate shrine
for Brahma, the creator who has been given back the creation power
by Lord Siva here. There is a separate place with a Sivalinga
for the saint Pathanjali who is said to have lived here.
The temple tank is the oldest rain water harvesting tank and
the ingenuity in the construction is laudable.
The Sastha temple in ruins nearby and the Kasi viswanathar temple
construed by cholas with a sacred tank a km. away are to be visited.
Thirupattur lies 32 kms from Tiruchy and 4 kms west of Siruganur
that lies in Tiruchy-Chennai Highway.

This temple lies ½ a km near
kollidam bridge in Musiri Road. This is a temple for Lord Brahma,
siva,& vishnu. This is one of the 108 important shrines for
Lord vishnu. For goddess Sarawathi separate shrine is here .This
temple is sung by Thirumangai Alwar, one of the 12 important vaishnavite
saints. |

AND VALANADU
Verappur is a place of pilgrimage connected with
the history of Ponner-Sankar those who ruled this region. There
are Temples for Ponner- Sankar & Periyakandi Amman.
Ponnar-Sankar are said to have lived at Valanadu and Veerapur.The
Neeli Valanadu Fort is rectangular in shape (460 feet x 295 feet).
There was a moat around the palace. Ichi tree, the basement of the
entire fortification, some remains of the moat are existing.
The flower garden for the sister Arukkani, a well
are now called Sadayandi Thoppu. At Gowndanpatti, Nellipatti, Velankulathur
temples for Ponner Sanakar are existing, At Usilampatti Oorani (Kulam)
near Manaparai a temple for Thangal is existing.
There are stories that at Veeramalai now (Veerapur
) Sankar along with his friend Sambhuvan died in the war with Thalaiyur
Kali King. His brother after fulfilling the religious vow, learnt
the death of his brother and ended his life. Their sister Thangal
also prayed the Periya Kandi Amman at Veerapur and went west. From
15th century the people of this region are praying Ponner, Sankar,
Periyakandi Amman, Thangal and Arukkani. Veerapur is 45 kms from
Tiruchirappalli, 12 kms from Manaparai, 20 kms from Vaiyampatti.

THIRUVELLARAI From Tiruchirappalli
town on the Thuraiyur road it surprises the visitor with its many
ancient monuments dating back to the Pallavas.The temple is built
on a rock and the village is at the foot of it. An important landmark
is the large and ancient well, with four entrances all similarly
cut. The four flights of steps are in the shape of a Hindu Swastika.The
tank was excavated by kamban arayan the official of nandi varman
II , the pallava king it’s other wise called marvidugu perun

ANNAKAMAKSHI
AMMAN AND PERIANNASAMY TEMPLE -OMANDUR
On the occasion of Maha sivarathri, soothsayers and exorcists of
various hues and from far-flung areas congregate at the Kamakshiamman
and the Periannasamy temples at Omandur, 30 kms from Tiruchirappalli.
Hundreds of poojaris, both men and women, took their appointed places
in the temple complex 'driving' away evil spirits, that 'possessed'
women by reciting verses and playing percussion instrument 'udukkai'
simultaneously.
Besides, hundreds of devotees throng the temple. But they are
out numbered by curious onlookers who took the trouble of visiting
the place, trucked away in a corner of the district, braving the
mad rush in all buses specially run for the purpose.
Apart from playing the 'udukkai', the poojaris also rolled out
a set of dozen small white 'sozhis' and interpreted the meaning
according to the number of 'sozhis' cast open. For relating the
'kuri' or soothsaying, the charges varied from Rs. 27.25 to Rs.110.25.
If you are 'deeply possessed' and need urgent remedial measures,
the charges go up accordingly. Regardless of the case, all beneficiaries
need to offer betel leaves and arica nut to the poojaris prior
to soothsaying.
Masi kundru ( hillock)in kolli hills ; puliyancholai kallathukombai
and Vairichetti palayam are also associated with this temple and
the jothi (lamp ) is worshipped as main deity here.

AMMAN TEMPLE-MANGALAM
A Six feet tall Budha stone statue is found in Mangalam village
in the Aravayi Amman temple that lies 15 kms north east of Musiri
and 5 kms south west of Thuraiyur. The Poraikizhan deity in a sudai
made horse is also under worship in this temple. The local people
worship the Budha as Chettiyar, may be the reason that their forefathers
were Budhists. |

VADANARAYANA
PERUMAL THIRUNARAYANAPURAM
Thirunarayananapuram located on the way to Thottiyam in Kattuputhur
road with a de-tour of 2 Kms near Arasalur in Tiruchirappalli District
is connected by bus from Tiruchriappalli and Musiri. The A/M Vedanarayanaperumal
temple is also called Sathurvedimangalam and Vedapuri.
This is an very ancient temple with additions constructed during
Nayak period in the 15th century. This temple has two prakaram and
has two main shrines for Permual and Thayar. There is also a separate
shrine for Goddess Saraswathi.
In the Sanctum God Perumal is reclaning on Athiseshan and the Four
Vedas are used as pillars by the God. Sridevi and Boodevi are near
the God. This temple is considered to be an important one as Lord
Perumal is advising Bramha.The name is considered to be an important
one as Lord Perumal is advising Bramha. The name of the Theertham
is Cauvery and the Thalavirusham is Vilva Tree.
The festivals are Bramotchavam for eleven days during the vaigasi
(May-June); Navarathiri Urchavam for nine days during puratasi (September-October);
Vaikunda Eakadesi festivals for 21days during margazhi (Dec-Janauary);
Masi Magam during masi (Feb-March). Besides this, there are many
festivals also celebrated in this temple.

MADURAI
KALIAMMAN, THOTTIAM
Thottiam is in Tiruchirappalli District in Namakkal route and just
half a K.m . from Vanapattarai Ground, here lies the temple A/M.
Madurai Kaliamman. This village is called Gowtharasanallur. Buses
are available from Tiruchirappalli and Musiri to Thottiyam.
About 500 years back King Esanakarayar ruled this area. Chinnan,
a servant who worked in his stable, wants to go to Kali Festival
at Madurai. He got permission from the King and he went to Madurai
with his “Parai”, a musical drum and stayed at his brother-in-laws
houses. Next day he went to Kali temple and began to play “Parai”
rhythamically. Goddess Kali admired by the music of chinnan and
followed him back to Thottiam and Goddess Kali seated under the
“ Vanni” tree. Latter a temple was constructed by Pujankrayar
at this place. This temple is surrounded by lush green fields. There
is a 3 tier tower, 27 pillar mandapam and a 5 pillar Arthamandapam
gives notorious look to this temple. Many beautiful sculptures are
carved inside the temple. The name of the Goddess is MaduraiKaliamman
and the Thalavirusham is “Vanni” tree.
The festivals are Ani-Thirumanchanam (June-July); Navarathiri- ‘puratasi’
(September); Sivarathiri - ‘masi(Feb-March); Car Festival
Traces of a fort and an idol namely called the fort Karuppan are
here. At Thottiyam, the Esawari Tank at the Thirupursundari Analadeswarar
Temple i.e. the Agni Kund i.e. Brahma Kuda, the Yaha Kund of Lord
Brahma in which Lor Siva who came for ‘Thiripurasamharam’
dance. Therefore, this Siva is called ‘Analadeeswarar’.

Aadi Lakshmi A/M Adimoolaperumal temple 12 kms from Lalgudi via
Pinnavasal, Alangudi Mahajanam or via Pullampadi, Uvanar,rr-Venkatachalapuram
(7kms) can reach here. Nandiyaru passes by. Gajendra Theertham and
Sakkara Theertham lies here. The sanctum Sanctorum was constructed
by Rajaraja I (993 AD). Kulothunga III reconstructed in 1216 AD

Brahma, Indran, Manamathan, Agnidevan and Chandrasudan worshipped
this God Thirumoolanathar to attain ‘mukthi’. Manmathan
was fired by Lord Siva and he got back life at this place. Hence,
this place is called as “Poovaliyur” and later this
place is renamed as “Poovalur”. The main temple measures
130’ width and 170’ length facing east and there are
four prakara. There is a sub-shrine for Vinayakar. This temple was
sung by Saint Arunagirinathar. Panguni river flows nearly. The Goddess
is called Kunkuma Sundari and a temple tree is Vilvam. The festivals
are Tamil New Year (April); Chitra Pournami (April-May); Masi Magam
(Feb-March); Panguni Uthiram (March-April); Thai Poosam (Jan-Feb);
and Vinayakar Charthurthi (September)
