Growth of Vehicles

The number of vehicles registered in Tamil Nadu as on 01-04-2006 is 82,21,730. There has been tremendous growth in number of registered vehicles due to rapid urbanisation and general economic improvement.

Growth of vehicle population can be seen in  Table - 1. The categorywise vehicle on road as on 01-04-2006 are shown in  Table - 2.

Transport Department is one of the major revenue-earning departments of the State Government. The expenditure incurred on the establishment of the department was 49.45 Crores in 2005-2006. This is about 4.38% of the total revenue collected.

Stage Carriages
Stage Carriages provide bus facilities to all Towns and Villages. There are 24395 buses in the State. There are 17635 buses owned by the State Transport Undertakings and 6760 buses in Private Sector.

Contract Carriages

 i)          Omni Bus: As on 01-04-2006, 310 Omni Buses with State permit and 153 Omni Bus   with All India Permit operated in the State.

ii)         Motor Cabs & Maxi Cabs: The maximum seating capacity of a Motor Cab and Maxi Cab are 6 + 1 and 12 + 1 respectively. As on 01-04-2006, their numbers are as follows:

1. Motor Cabs with Statewide permit : 42797

2. Motor Cabs with All India Permit : 7051

3. Maxi Cabs with Statewide permit : 24591

4. Maxi Cabs with All India Permit : 939

Autorickshaws

The total number of autorickshaws plying in Tamil Nadu and in Chennai City as on 1.4.2006 are as follows:-

Tamil Nadu             -    1,33,639

Chennai City          -        41,316

Autorickshaw Fare:

Minimum Charge  

Rs. 14/- for two kilometers

For each kilometer

40 paise for 5 minues

Day time fare plus 25% extra

Three Wheeler Five Seater Autorickshaws: (Share Auto)

The Government have permitted to operate 3 wheeler 5 seater autorickshaw (5 + 1=6 in all) 200 numbers in Chennai city and 50 each in all District Head quarters so as to ply 30 km radius from District Head quarters.

The Government after careful consideration regarding the fare to be collected from the travelling public have to be fixed as Re.1/- per k.m per head  (No meter need be fixed) in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of Section 67 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (General Act 1988).
