The number of vehicles registered in Tamil Nadu as on 01-04-2006 is 82,21,730. There has been tremendous growth in number of registered vehicles due to rapid urbanisation and general economic improvement. Growth of vehicle population can be seen in Table - 1. The categorywise vehicle on road as on 01-04-2006 are shown in Table - 2. Transport Department is one of the major revenue-earning departments of the State Government. The expenditure incurred on the establishment of the department was 49.45 Crores in 2005-2006. This is about 4.38% of the total revenue collected. Stage Carriages provide bus facilities to all Towns and Villages. There are 24395 buses in the State. There are 17635 buses owned by the State Transport Undertakings and 6760 buses in Private Sector.
