The Tamil Nadu State Land Use Board (TNSLUB) was first established in 1975. In 1981, the Government transferred the functions of State Land Use Board to the State Planning Commission with a view to ensure that State Planning Commission can manage the cell well as it has access with all Government of India, Universities and Tamil Nadu State Departments, which are implementing land and water resources development programmes.

The Government of Tamil Nadu reconstituted the State Land Use Board in March, 1990 with Vice- Chairman , State Planning Commission as its Chairman and the Member-Secretary, State Planning Commission as its Co-Chairman, and Secretaries to Government and Heads of Departments concerned with Land and Water Use as its Members.

A Nucleus Cell with Head of Division (Land Use), who is also the Secretary, TNSLUB, with supporting staff of one Planning Officer, Technical Assistant, Planning Assistant and Personal Clerk has been functioning in the State Planning Commission for carrying out the functions of the TNSLUB.
