Net information on service depts. in bilingual format

CHENNAI NOV. 25. The Tamil Nadu Government has drawn up a programme to provide Internet information, in a "bilingual format", on all major service-oriented departments, Vivek Harinarain, Secretary, Information Technology, said here today.

The Government was confident of disseminating information bilingually at least by March next. The services of Tamil Virtual University were being utilised. Mr. Harinarain was addressing an Indo-UK seminar on `Promise and Potential of e-governance' organised by the Academy of Management Excellence.

A pilot project was currently under way to issue web-enabled light motor vehicle licence through Regional Transport Offices. S. Ganapathy, DGP Training, Police Training College, said that as part of the curriculum, a basic 7-month course in computer handling had been imparted to constables. The first such batch of 3,540 computer-trained constables would complete the course on November 30. John Thornton, Director of e-Government — a UK-based improvement and development agency — , said one of the major factors for the success of IT initiatives in the U.K. was "political will" and citizens' responsiveness to it.

The ACME Director, S. Ramchander, and R.Venugopal, said the seminar was part of a series of events planned as a partnership between the ACME, Chennai, a leading management education, training and consulting organisation and the British Council, U.K.'s international organisation for educational and cultural relations.
