Local library Authority is functioning under the department of Public libraries governed by the Government of tamilnadu.According to the act of "Tamilnadu library Act"1948,Local library Authority in coimbatore was established in 1950.Thiru Kovaikilar C.M.RAMACHANDRAN CHETTIAR was elected as the first chairman of the local library Authority.District Educational officer was in the Chair of secretary until 1977.From 1977 District library officer post was created and he acts as the secretary of local library Authority.

The finance collected from local bodies.which collects library tax along with Property tax acts as the main source for the growth and development of the libraries.

Philanthropists and patroners also solicited who are willing to donate and take part in the development of libraries.

All the libraries in the district are functioning under the control of District Library Officer.
