NSS State
Co-ordinator and Director of Collegiate Education Letter dated: 12.2.2001.
---
ORDER:-
National Service Scheme is being implemented in Tamil Nadu in Schools,
Polytechnics, Colleges and Universities
and the Scheme is doing excellent service to public at large.
The NSS State Co-ordinator in his letter read above has stated that a
large number of students and their parents are not aware of the various
opportunities for Higher Studies and Jobs open to them and consequently they
miss out on many flourishing careers. He has therefore suggested that Career
Guidance may be included as one of the components of NSS regular activities and
out of 120 hours per year for regular activities, 30 hours may be
earmarked for Career Guidance. He
has also suggested that a Career Guidance and Counselling Centre (CGCC) may be
set up in each University / College / Polytechnic /
Higher Secondary School having NSS which would
offer guidance to the students to choose their right career.
This would be a genuinely useful service to the society that NSS can
render.
2) The
Government have carefully examined the above proposal of the NSS State Co-ordinator
and direct that “Career Guidance” be
included as one of the components
of NSS under its “Regular activities” for 30 hours in a year. The first
Career Guidance Exhibition-cum-Workshop called
“Mapping the Future – Career Avenues for the Youth” is proposed to
be held on 17th and 18th February, 2001 at Chennai under
NSS. The Government direct that such Career Guidance Exhibitions-cum-Workshops
be held at all District Headquarters every year as part of NSS Programme and out
of NSS funds. The Government also direct that a “Career Guidance and
Counselling Centre” should be set
up in each College, Polytechnic and Higher Secondary School having NSS. These Centres will work under the control of a NSS Progaramme
Officer and out of the NSS Regular Funds already available with the respective
Institutions. They can display
charts books, magazines and news
articles relating to opportunities for Higher Education and Jobs.
3) The NSS
State Co-ordinator and Director of Collegiate Education is requested to give
necessary instructions to all Programme Co-ordinators for the implementation of
the above orders of the Government.
