M.G.R. KNOWLEDGE PARK within the M.G.R. Film city - Formation - Orders - issued

Tamil Nadu is well positioned in progressing rapidly in the development of sectors which are commonly classified as Knowledge Sector. Strong technical and educational infrastructure, vast pool of technical manpower, growth-conducive infrastructure are the key factors prevalent in Tamil Nadu for the speedy development in the Knowledge industry. There are also a large number of research institutions operating in this field. Government considers that support of research activities in this field will yield significant results for the development of the industry in the State. To achieve this objective, Government have decided to set up a Knowledge Park in Chennai. This Park entitled "M.G.R Knowledge Park" will be located in the erstwhile MGR Film City at Taramani.

2. In the area allocated for MGR Film City, 24.78 acres of land have remained unutilised. To develop a suitable park, this area is placed at the disposal of Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO) which will be the nodal agency for the Knowledge Park development. Information and Tourism Department and TIDCO will demark the specific area to be carved into the Knowledge Park and also ensure that proper access to this area through the existing Film City is developed.

3. This Knowledge Park will house different research projects in the field of Information Technology, Bio-technology, Telecommunications and the like. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, has proposed to set up a Research Project for research in the field of Communication and Information Technology. TIDCO has approached several institutions to set up research facilities in the field of Bio-technology. Such institutions can be located in this area. TIDCO will take necessary steps to commission the project in the year 2002-2003.
