Government of Tamil nadu

ABSTRACT

Tamil Nadu Anatomy Act 1951 – Diverting the unclaimed dead bodies in Government Hospitals to the Government Medical Colleges for Academic purposes – Orders issued.

HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE (Z1) DEPARTMENT

G.O (Ms) No.168
Dated: 8.4.2004

Read:

From Director of Medical Education No.19583/G2/2003, dated 7.8.2003.

At present unclaimed dead bodies in Government Hospitals are kept in the mortuaries for 10 days and thereafter handed over to Municipal/Corporations authorities for disposal. As many new Government and Private Medical and Dental colleges have been started in recent years the Cadavers available in Government Teaching Hospital are insufficient to meet their demands.

2. The Director of Medical Education has suggested to the Government that the unclaimed dead bodies which are handed over to the Municipality/Corporation authorities for disposal may be diverted to the Department of Anatomy of the Government Medical Colleges which will utilize the cadavers for academic purpose, by allotting the cadavers to Government Medical Colleges.

3. The Government have examined the request of the Director of Medical Education carefully and have decided to accept her proposal accordingly, the Government direct the Government Hospitals to divert the unclaimed dead bodies in Government Hospitals to the Department of Anatomy of Government Medical Colleges for Academic purpose, instead of handing over the unclaimed dead bodies to the Municipal/Corporation authorities for disposal.

4. The order issues with the concurrence of the Municipal and Water Supply Department vide its No.989/MC1/2004-1, dated 24.1.2004.
