ABSTRACT

Information Technology –  'SARI' Pilot Project - Extension of the project to ten other districts of Tamil Nadu and renaming of the project as 'RASI'  -   Orders - Issued.

ORDER:         

A Pilot Project implemented in Melur Taluk, Madurai District had been named as SARI ( Sustainable Access in Rural India) Project.  In IT Department G.O. (Ms.) No.8, dated 23.2.2001, initial orders on the Pilot Project of SARI were issued.  The objectives of the Pilot Project which are mentioned below have been  successfully achieved:-

  • To bridge the gap of the digital divide between rural and urban areas.

  • Establish Rural Connectivity (networking)

  • The benefits of the developments in Information Technology initiatives should reach the common citizen in rural areas.

  • To facilitate dissemination of information in all fronts of social development to the rural public (Village citizen) at a nearest location to them and at a substantially low cost.

 In view of the successful achievement of the objectives above, it has been decided to scale up the Pilot project to 10 other districts viz-

1.     Maduari
2.     Cuddalore
3.     Coimbatore
4.     Kancheepuram
5.     Theni
6.     Tirunelveli
7.     Salem
8.     Nagapattinam
9.     Erode and
10.   Tiruvallur

 In view of the decision taken by the Government of Tamil Nadu to extend the project throughout Tamil Nadu  it has been decided that the 'SARI' project should be re-named as "RASI" (Rural  Access to Services through the Internet).  All departments and District Collectors are directed to use the new nomenclature in all their references.
