Review of Tamil Nadu Economy An Overview The current year priorities focus a distinctly clear outlook in the infrastructure development in the State. In fact, they remain in the top of the agenda through out, indicating an edge over all items to provide the fundamentals required essentially for the pace to economic development. The creation of "Uzhavar Sandhai", construction of a number of bridges and irrigation channels, laying of new roads and strengthening of the existing ones, increasing the facilities for potable water supply, creation of community internet centres and opening the flood gates to the Information Technology to sweep through the corridors of the State, all stand testimony to the tireless efforts of the State in pursuit of growth. The resolve being displayed by the Government in bringing about reforms in the industrial sector for making the State the preferred destination for international capital inflows has enhanced the image in being unique thereby contributing virtuous economic cycle of investment, creation of jobs, and related demand. In agriculture, as a major initiative for reclamation, the State has constituted a committee, first of its kind in the whole nation, to bring in 30,000 hectares of wasteland, for development. So far, 10,000 hectares of wasteland have been brought under orchid cultivation and also with the planting of other trees. Sponsored by the Agriculture Department, the Institute of Remote Sensing has prepared an atlas on Block-wise Data Base, which would help in taking up the deliberations straight away. While the State has earmarked Rs.5 crores for taking up the development of 12,500 hectares , rest would be met from the Central assistance. Apart from this, the concept of farmers participation in irrigation management, which is at present followed in a limited way under schemes such as Tank Modernisation Programme and Water Resources Consolidation, has gained a larger vision with the State adopting the Farmers Management of Irrigation System Bill in the Assembly recently. Once this is enacted, the scheme would set to begin covering the entire State providing farmers participation on a three-tier basis. The policy initiatives of the State have acquired an additional dimension of meaning by the Implementation of such economic plans and programmes effectively and efficiently.
