7. AGRICULTURAL WAGES

Classification of Agricultural Labourers

Statistics regarding daily wages paid to Agricultural Labourers, are collected every month from 385 villages at the rate of one village per Block. The Agricultural Labourers are classified into two groups viz.,

  1. Field Labourers

  2. Other Agricultural Labourers.

Field Labourers comprise of Ploughmen, Sowers, Pluckers, Transplanters, Weeders, Reapers and Harvesters. Other Agricultural Labourers consist of labourers engaged in watering, carrying loads, digging wells and other agricultural related works.

Index Number of Agricultural wages

The Index number for wages of different categories of Labour is being worked out on the basis of wages prevailing at the selected villages in the state with the base year 1993-94. Districtwise details of average rates of daily wages paid to certain categories of Agricultural Labourers for 2005 – 06 are given in Table VI A. Index Number of wages paid to certain categories of Agricultural Labourers 2005-06 are furnished in Table VI B. Index Number of Agricultural wages are very essential for assessing the trend in cost of cultivation.

The indices of wages paid to all the categories in 2005-06 have increased except the women category of transplanters and weeders when compared to the previous year 2004-05.

The Index of wages paid to Ploughmen which was 320 points in July’05 (with base year 1993-94) has fluctuated during the year and reached 335points in June’06.

The indices of wages for both Men and Women Labourers engaged in other activities have also fluctuated during the year while the index of wages for men and women working as reapers and harvesters were the highest in Feb’06 as it was the peak harvesting season.
