"CITIZEN'S CHARTER AND GUIDELINES
TO PUBLIC"
GENESIS
The
Annamalai University owes its existence to
the vision, wisdom, benefaction and philanthropy of Dr. Rajah Sri Annamalai Chettiar. As
early as 1920, he founded the Sri Minakshi College at the temple town of Chidambaram. In
1928, the Annamalai University Act was passed and Sri Minakshi College formed the nucleus
of this unitary and residential University. With its rural setting and progressive
outlook, the seat of this seminary of higher education came to be called
Annamalai nagar
after its illustrious Founder.
Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar donated a
fabulous sum of Rs.20 lakhs and 300 acres of land besides the buildings, hostels, library
and playgrounds of Sri Minakshi College, thus paving the way for establishing, the
University in 1929 and the Founder was gratefully honoured with the Pro-Chancellorship of
the University. During his tenure of Pro-Chancellorship for a long period of two decades,
he took great care of the University and paid devoted attention to its growth and
development. Whoever was found an expert in a particular academic field was approached by
the Founder and was brought to the University to head the various departments of
study.
GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
The Founders eldest son, Dr. Rajah Sri
Muthiah Chettiar adorned the Pro-Chancellor ship in 1948 after his fathers death. A
multi-faceted personality of rare caliber, he strove with sustained vigour and zeal to
lead the University into "fresh fields and pastures new." He gave new dimensions
and direction to the functioning of the University. He evinced keen interest in broadening
and direction to the functioning of the University. He evinced keen interest in broadening
the frontiers of the functioning of the University. He evinced keen interest in broadening
the frontiers of the Universitys academic pursuits starting new departments of
study, particularly in the domains of Agriculture, Engineering and Technology, Commerce,
Business Administration and Medicine. The Distance Education wing of the University, his
brain-child was established in 1979 and it renders yeoman service in the field of
continuing education, y taking higher education to the doors of the needy.
CONSOLIDATION AND EXPANSION
Dr.
M.A.M. Ramaswamy succeeded his father as
Founder Pro-Chancellor of the University in 1984. True to the tradition of the Chettinad
Family, the present Pro-Chancellor with the insight of an able entrepreneur, the
organizational capability of an executive, the versatility of a venturesome industrialist,
the qualities of leadership in organization and attention to the growth of this
University. Under his able administration the University has grown rapidly and widely. Now
it has 52 departments of study with more than 860 teaching staff and 1960 administrative
staff. It has a student strength of 9000 pursuing different regular courses of study.
A galaxy of distinguished
Vice-Chancellors-eminent men of standing and achievement, and invariably skilled speakers
of English have added charm and luster to the office of the Vice-Chancellor, these
seventy years. The present Vice-Chancellor Dr.M.G.Muthukumarasamy, is a distinguished
surgeon and an able administrator.
Today, the University occupies an extensive area
of 1000 acres. Being a residential type institution, the get-together of staff and
students remains an essential dimension. Nearly every department in the University
conducts its own seminars and there are also interdisciplinary seminars. In these
seminars, the scholars and teachers interact and explore their academic interests together
contributing to the academic excellence. Since its establishment the University campus has
been the venue of a number of important national conferences and seminars.
The Silver Jubilee (1954), the Golden Jubilee
(1979) and the Diamond Jubilee (1989) celebrations were the three important milestones in
the history of Annamalai University.
THE LIBRARY
The University Library, named after the eminent
scholar-statesman and former Vice-Chancellor Sir C.P.Ramaswami Aiyar, is a key resource
for students and staff. It has a collection of nearly 4.5 lakh volumes selected to support
the various academic programmes of the University. The Library subscribes to about 800
current periodicals and newspapers and maintains substantial back files of these in bound

PUBLICATIONS DIVISION
The Publications Division of the University is
one of the earliest, most popular, non-profitable publishers of scholarly books in India.
Thanks to the benign wish of the Founder it came into being to popularize the ancient
Tamil classics and other modern research findings. The Founders aim was to make
available the classics in the language and other socially relevant research works at the
lowest possible price. Accordingly, the books brought out by the Division are sold at an
unbelievably low price.
The Division has published more than 550 titles
on a wide range of subjects. Apart from books, it regularly publishes Humanities Journal,
Science Journal, Engineering Journal, Indian Languages Journal and Agriculture Research
