State Minorities Commission

Objectives

Government has taken utmost care in formulating and implementing welfare schemes so as to make the Minorities feel that they are an integral part of the culture and ethos of the society and the State.  Emphasis will be on the overall socio-economic development of the Minorities with special focus on their education and employment.  For safeguarding the interests of both Religious and Linguisitic Minorities, the Minorities commission has been constituted by the State Government. The State Minorities commission has been assigned the status of a first class committee.

The State Minorities Commission has been functioning in the State to protect the rights and interest of Minorities.  This Commission visits various parts of the State to study the problems of the minorities and recommends suitable remedial measures to the Departments concerned.

The following schemes are being implemented towards the welfare of minorities through various departments of the Government in the State:-

  • Giving special consideration for minorities in recruitment to Police  forces.

  • Giving fair chances to Minorities in developmental schemes.

  • Providing facilities to students of minorities to study through their mother tongue.

  • Supplying text books through Tamilnadu Text Book Corporation for Linguistic Minorities.

  • Running Teacher Training Institutes in Urdu, Telugu and Malayalam language at Chennai, Krishnagiri and Therur (Kanniyakumari district) respectively.
